Joseph T. Flynn, MD, MS, ASPN President, received his MD degree from the State University of NY, Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. He completed both his pediatric residency and pediatric nephrology fellowship at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, PA. He also has received a M.S. Degree in Clinical Research methods at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2003. He is currently a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine and Chief, Division of Nephrology as well as Medical Director of Dialysis at Seattle Children's Hospital in Seattle, WA. His main areas of clinical and research interest include therapy of childhood hypertension, cardiovascular disease in children with chronic kidney disease, and pediatric dialysis.

 

Since joining the ASPN, Dr. Flynn has served as a member and then Co-Chair of the Clinical Affairs Committee, Councilor, Secretary, President-elect and now President. While on Council, he was involved with development of ASPN’s Strategic Plan and subsequent formation of the membership Task Force (now Membership Committee). In addition to his ASPN activities, Dr. Flynn is a past chair and current Executive Committee member of the International Pediatric Hypertension Association, past member of the Section on Nephrology Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and member of the Atherosclerosis, Hypertension, and Obesity in the Young (AHOY) Committee of the American Heart Association’s Council on Cardiovascular Disease in the Young. He is a reviewer for numerous scientific journals and currently is on the editorial boards of Pediatric Nephrology and the American Journal of Hypertension.

Victoria F. Norwood, MD, President Elect of the ASPN, is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine where she is Chief of the Division of Pediatric Nephrology and Director of the Fellowship Training Program. She received her MD from Tulane University, completed her residency and chief residency in pediatrics at Tulane, and her pediatric nephrology training at the University of Virginia. Dr. Norwood has basic science research expertise in the arena of developmental nephrology but also directs the pediatric component of the Nephrology Clinical Research Center at UVA. She has served as Chair of the Sub board of Pediatric Nephrology of the The American Board of Pediatrics and currently serves on the ABP Long-Range Planning Committee and Subspecialty Clinical Training and Certification Taskforce. She also serves as Medical Director of the UVA Children’s Fitness Clinic, a multidisciplinary program addressing the complex issues of pediatric and adolescent obesity. Since joining the ASPN, Dr. Norwood has served on the research committee and the training and certification committee. She is a member for the Society for Pediatric Research and The American Society of Nephrology.

Sharon A. Perlman, MD, is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida, and practices predominantly at its affiliated All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she is Medical Director of the ESRD program and past Chief of Staff. She received her MD degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, began her pediatric residency at Tufts-New England Medical Center (Boston Floating Hospital), and completed pediatric residency and chief residency at Emory University (Grady Memorial Hospital). She completed her pediatric nephrology fellowship at St. Christopher’s Hospital in Philadelphia.

 

Following fellowship, Dr. Perlman established the pediatric nephrology and ESRD program at the Medical College of Georgia, then moved to Florida where she was initially in private pediatric nephrology practice at All Children’s Hospital and later joined USF.

 

Dr. Perlman has been a member of ASPN since 1984. She has been an active member and co-chair of the Public Policy committee, and has served as the Council liaison for the practice management and member education task forces. She served as Treasurer of ASPN 2010-2012. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Renal Physician’s Association.

H. William Schnaper, Past-President of the ASPN, is Givens Professor and Vice Chair of Pediatrics at Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University (NU) in Chicago, where he also directs several programs in the Center for Education and Career Development of the NU Clinical and Translational Science Institute. He received his MD degree from the University of Maryland, and completed a residency in Pediatrics at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and a Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. He directs an active, NIH-supported laboratory focused on signal transduction mechanisms involved in renal fibrogenesis.

 

Since joining the ASPN, Dr. Schnaper has served as a member and then Co-Chair of the Research Committee, and then on Council. He was Secretary-Treasurer of ASPN from 2004-08, President-elect from 2008-10 and President from 2010-2012. Other academic service includes previous membership on the American Society of Nephrology Basic Science and Program Committees and co-organizer of an ASN Basic Science Meeting on Renal Fibrosis. He has served on multiple NIH study sections and is Medical Editor for the American Board of Pediatrics Subboard in Nephrology. He is a member of the Society for Pediatric Research, American Pediatric Society, and the editorial board of Pediatric Nephrology.

Dr. Prasad Devarajan, elected to ASPN Council in 2009, is the Louise M. Williams Endowed Chair, Professor of Pediatrics and Developmental Biology, Director of Nephrology and Hypertension, Director of Clinical Laboratories, and CEO of the Dialysis Unit at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and University of Cincinnati. He serves on the Editorial and Review Boards for over 30 journals, and on multiple NIH Study Sections. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publicatioins. He has been continuously funded by the NIH and several other foundations for over 20 years. His major research interests lie in the pathogenetic pathways, diagnostic biomarkers, and novel therapies of acute kidney injury.

   Larry Greenbaum

Larry Greenbaum is Division Director of Pediatric Nephrology and the Marcus Chair of Pediatric Nephrology at the Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta. He is also the Director of Pediatric Nephrology at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. He received his MD and PhD degrees from the Yale School of Medicine, and completed a residency in Pediatrics and a fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology at the UCLA School of Medicine. He is engaged in a variety of clinical research studies. Since joining the ASPN, Dr. Greenbaum has served as a member the Workforce Committee and the Practice Management Committee. In addition, Dr. Greenbaum is currently the chair of the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Nephrology and serves on the nephrology section of the American Board of Pediatrics.

   Mary B. Leonard

Mary Leonard, MD, MSCE, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), and a Senior Scholar in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the Director of the Office of Clinical and Translational Research at CHOP. She received her MD degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. She completed a residency in Pediatrics and fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology at CHOP, and a Master’s degree in clinical epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Leonard has established a multidisciplinary research program in clinical bone disease in children and adults. Her research program is focused on the accurate assessment and diagnosis of osteoporosis in children with chronic disease, the detrimental effects of glucocorticoid therapy, muscle deficits and inflammation on bone development in varied pediatric disorders, the assessment of the unique effects of kidney disease on skeletal structure in children and adults using novel micro-imaging techniques, and the evaluation of biomechanical interventions as potential anabolic bone therapies in patients with chronic disease. Her research program is supported by multiple NIH investigator-initiated grants, including R01s and NIDDK K24 mid-career award.

 

Since joining the ASPN in 1997, Dr. Leonard served on the Program Directors / Workforce Committee, the Career Mentoring Taskforce, and the ASPN Program Committee. She currently co-chairs the Research Committee. She also served as a member of the ASN Program Committee, the National Kidney Foundation Scientific Advisory Board, the American Academy of Pediatrics Executive Committee of the Section of Nephrology, and the National Kidney Foundation KDOQI Bone Disease Pediatric Working Group. She served on the Program Committee of the 8th IPNA Symposium on Growth in CKD, and was Co-Chair of the Clinical Science Program Committee for the 15th IPNA Congress. She has been a member of multiple NIH Study Sections and Special Emphasis Panels. She is an Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, and a member of the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Society of Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Goldstein is Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Director of the Center for Acute Care Nephrology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He received his MD degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his pediatric residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and his pediatric nephrology fellowship at Children’s Hospital, Boston. His clinical research interests in maintenance dialysis and acute kidney injury have led to over 100 peer reviewed publications and resulted in his appointment to KDOQI hemodialysis adequacy, vascular access and pediatric nutrition guideline work groups and the KDIGO International Acute Kidney Injury Guideline work group. He also participates as a Board Member of the NAPRTCS, and served as the first Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee to the Forum of ESRD Networks, of which he also is a Board Member. He has been active on the ESRD Network of Texas and the Renal Network for medical review boards for the past 10 years. His current main research foci include AKI epidemiology and outcomes, acute renal replacement therapy provision and investigation of novel urinary AKI biomarkers in the pediatric population. He has a strong record of interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration, evidenced by his establishment and directing of the Prospective Pediatric Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (ppCRRT) Registry and its success as well as collaboration with critical care physicians, cardiologists and emergency medicine physicians to study AKI in their populations. The ppCRRT is now transforming into an international research consortium focused on acute kidney injury, the Prospective Pediatric Acute Kidney Injury Research Group (ppAKI-RG). He has been an active member of ASPN’s Clinical Practice Committee and Public Policy Committee for the past 6 years. He has also represented the ASPN ASPN representative to the Acute Kidney Injury Network, the CMS Clinical Technical Expert Panel for Pediatric Hemodialysis and Anemia, and the AMA-PCPI.

Alicia Neu is the Clinical Director of Pediatric Nephrology and Medical Director of Pediatric Kidney Transplantation and Dialysis at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She received her MD from University of Virginia School of Medicine, and completed a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric nephrology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Neu is involved in a variety of clinical research projects, with a focus on assessment and improvement of care in pediatric CKD patients. Since joining the ASPN, Dr. Neu has served on the Clinical Affairs Committee and the Practice Management Task Force, as well as the Training and Certification Committee and Program Directors Sub-committee.

 

In addition to her position as Councilor for the ASPN, Dr. Neu is a member the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Nephrology, the Board of Directors of the North American Pediatric Renal Trials and Collaborative Study. She is also active in the American Society of Transplantation, where she currently serves as Past-Chair of the Executive Committee of the Pediatric Community of Practice.

Ms. Schubert has served in key staff roles in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she developed expertise on a broad array of issues including health care, tax, transportation, infrastructure and energy policy. During her tenure on Capitol Hill, she also helped local governments, businesses and other organizations secure federal appropriations and navigate the federal regulatory process.

 

Ms. Schubert previously worked with Representative Nancy Johnson, who served as chair of the House Ways and Means health subcommittee, and later served as legislative director for Representative Wayne T. Gilchrest of Maryland, a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure committee.

 

Ms. Schubert attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA, where she earned a B.A. in Political Science.
